Do Not Believe The Misconceptions About Hypnosis

Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of a lot of myths created by popular imagination. Some regard them to be black magic whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Given below are some general beliefs associated with hypnosis, and the real truth behind them.

There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. It hinges more on the science of psychology and is very easy to practice for anyone who is prepared to learn it. Even people who have witnessed hypnosis on others usually refuse to acknowledge it. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are somehow weak mentally. But that is not true at all. Even people with strong will power can fall under the spell of a specialist hypnosis practitioner.

That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another misconception that has been doing the rounds. A hypnotized individual is fully alert of what is going on in his surroundings. Hypnosis actually induces a state of absolute calm characterized by a rise in levels of concentration, and this heightened awareness helps the subject to absorb new inputs with considerable ease.

Some scientists have concluded that hypnosis succeeds on just 5% of the human population, and this is another common myth. Although, the finding has some shred of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the researchers used the identical hypnosis technique for everyone. Hypnosis can’t be oversimplified like that and clicks only if there are different approaches for different characters.

People also tend to equate hypnosis to meditation. However, interaction between the subject and the practitioner is paramount in hypnosis, while meditation is like a communion with the self without any communication involved. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Trance is again a mental state sans any communication, on the other hand communication forms the very foundation of the hypnosis technique.

Another myth is that bodily and behavioural alterations in a person are not attainable through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is clearly not magic that it can transform the physical appearance of an individual on its own. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by altering behavioural patterns like overeating and chain smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.

Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have a significant role to play in the well-being of an individual, and not trying them out just because of some false notions is an act of folly.
